West Sound Technical Skills Center Modernization

The West Sound Technical Skills Center building and its systems do not meet current educational standards, codes or standards to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, energy standards, seismic standards or health codes. The modernization project will address health, safety and building code improvements, as well as programmatic changes to instructional space to create the space needed for today's high demand programs. Funding is provided for predesign and design phase work.

Pierce County Skills Center - Evergreen Building Modernization

Funding is provided for the predesign phase of the Pierce County Skills Center Evergreen Building modernization project. This project will provide additional classroom and shop spaces for construction trades and fire science courses. The project will also include complete health, safety and code upgrades in the building as well as changes to meet the needs of instructional programs housed there.

School District Health and Safety 2019-21

Funding is provided for grants to address school health and safety concerns statewide, prioritizing districts that lack sufficient local funding to address longstanding and urgent facility concerns. This continuing grant program will provide three grant opportunities to address health and safety, equal access and emergency repairs. Within the appropriation, $8 million is for health and safety and equal access grants, and $2 million is for an emergency repair pool grant.

Study and Survey Funding Enhancement - Natural Hazards Assessment

This funding will provide additional study and survey grant funding to school districts to conduct a Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) of each building used for instruction. A RVS is used to identify, inventory and score buildings according to their risk of collapse by a major earthquake. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction will collaborate with the Department of Natural Resources' Washington Geological Survey in determining seismic and other natural hazard risks that could affect schools statewide. The information collected from each RVS will be entered into the Information and Condition of Schools database (ICOS).

School Preservation Program 2019-21
