Public Service Recognition Week

Extra Mile and Leadership Awards

In the spirit of recognizing state employees that consistently excel above expectations, each year we call for nominations for the Extra Mile Award, and the Leadership Award. This year over 200 nominations were received. Here are the recipients of those awards announced in time for Public Service Recognition Week, the first week of May, 2026.

2026 Leadership Award winners

The 2026 PSRW Leadership Award recognizes individuals who demonstrate leadership through their daily behaviors—actions, decisions, and influence—regardless of job title or formal authority.

Awards Overview

This year, the Extra Mile and Leadership awards spotlight competencies that align with Washington state’s modern approach to public service, including:

  • Executive Order 25-06 establishes a comprehensive approach to improving customer experience across state government, emphasizing accessibility, efficiency, effectiveness, security, simplicity, accountability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Your Washington’s mission to bridge people and government by delivering timely, fair, and tailored services that exceed customer expectations.
  • The Three Pillars of Customer Experience which look beyond whether a service “works.” Great experiences also consider how people feel and how they see themselves in the process, meeting emotional, social and functional needs.

Judging committee

We use a committee system to select award winners. The committee is comprised of volunteers selected from past leadership award winners. We have 20 committee members reviewing nominations and selecting the final award winners based on the scoring criteria listed below.

Bias busting in selection process

Nominations are redacted to attempt to reduce name and gender recognition bias. The committee is asked to score the redacted submissions based on a set of criteria.

Scoring criteria

  • Five core competencies have been identified for each award.
  • Each competency is scored independently to evaluate behaviors and impact across multiple dimensions.
  • Judges will score each competency on a 1–5 scale based solely on the information provided in the nomination form.
