Definition
Within the Department of Information Services (DIS), serves as an assistant manager responsible for managing the electrical and mechanical systems, as well as the hardware installation/de-installation needed to effectively operate a large multi-mainframe computer data center. Reports to the Computer Installation Manager, and serves as a technical advisor to senior management on the installation and support systems.
Typical Work
Manages the electrical systems needed to maintain computer operations; assures sufficient power is available and that all equipment is adequately maintained according to manufacturer requirements and maintenance agreements;
Manages the mechanical systems required to maintain approved temperatures and humidity within the computer centers; maintains an environmental monitoring system complete with appropriate alarms; corrects air flow as needed to adjust temperature and humidity; maintains preventative maintenance programs on air conditioners, chillers, cooling towers, etc.;
Assists in the installation and removal of all computer equipment from the data centers; assures the availability of needed cabling, power, etc, required to add new equipment; supervises the removal of unused cables from computer raised floor; coordinates the positioning of computer equipment on the raised floor space to assure vendor required clearances are maintained and that temperatures and humidities in the centers are maintained; maintains inventories of cabling and equipment within the data centers;
Maintains processes and schedules to periodically check the emergency systems within the data centers; tests the adequacy of uninterruptible power supply systems, fire control systems, battery backup systems, alternate power systems, alarms, etc.;
Supervises and evaluates the work of staff for adherence to and accomplishment of agency and program policies;
Prepares project schedules, manpower requirements and cost estimates for system installation and maintenance;
Arranges and coordinates implementation of approved space plans of data center planning projects; schedules, coordinates and directs the work of project personnel; schedules and coordinates the incorporation of material resources into projects;
Performs necessary research and investigation to assure the most current techniques in space planning, programming, engineering, construction, etc., are utilized and considered in planning projects;
Completes special assignments and planning projects as requested by management;
Performs other work as required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: computer center operations; theory, principles and practices of electrical and mechanical engineering particularly as related to electrical, mechanical, and computer emergency and backup systems; inventory systems; computer hardware requirements; cabling schema.
Ability to: plan, organize and coordinate complex installation and maintenance activities within the data center without adversely affecting computer availability; communicate complex issues to agency management; establish and maintain effective working relationships with state and department officials, the public and contractors/lessors.

Desirable Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree
AND
Three years of experience managing installation support systems for a large multi-mainframe data center complex, two years of which must have been as a supervisor.
A Master's degree will substitute for one year of experience.
Additional qualifying experience will substitute, year for year, for education.
