Policy Changes
Lunar New Year
The Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs (CAPAA) requests $100,000 to create programs on Lunar New Year for K-12. During the 2024 session, the legislature enacted House Bill 2209 (HB 2209) making Lunar New a legislatively recognized day, codified under RCW 43.117.140. Under the bill, the legislature directed CAPAA to “create lunar new year programming and resources that these entities may use in planning and structuring their celebrations.” To fulfill this directive, CAPAA will use the appropriated funds to hire and oversee educational consultants to develop programs or adapt existing programs on Lunar New Year for K-12 students in Washington State.
