Toutle River Fish Collection Facility - Match

40000021

Funding is provided for replacing components of the fish collection facility, including hoists, railings, electrical systems and those that have reached or are nearing their expected functional life. After the 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed a dam to manage sediments in the North Fork Toutle River and protect downstream communities. The dam limits fish passage for Endangered Species Act-listed Coho and Steelhead to historic spawning habitat in the Toutle River watershed. Reappropriation authority is provided for purchase of easements as part of sediment abatement.

Ringold Hatchery Replace Ponds

40000101

This project will design and install 16 circular fiberglass tanks with an agricultural metal building containing bird predation netting and new drain system so water can be reclaimed into the 9-acre pond. In addition, this will provide a new water supply system, alarms and formalin system for the tanks. These ponds may also be needed for rearing spring Chinook salmon in an effort to help recover the Puget Sound’s southern resident killer whale population, listed for protection under the federal Endangered Species Act. Replacing the dilapidated structures would greatly reduce risk of fish loss and help ensure production goals for fish species are met.

Duckabush Estuary Habitat Restoration

40000163

This project addresses habitat degradation by removing estuary blockages such as highways, fill, levees and bridges, and reconnecting historical channels. Reconnecting the landscape results in improved tidal flow, sediment transport, distributary channel migration, detrital input/export and exchange of aquatic organisms which support a vibrant, dynamic and resilient estuarine habitat. Improving habitat creates favorable conditions for juvenile salmon as they pass through the estuary that provides food, rest, and protection from predators – all vital to growth and increasing their chances of survival in open saltwater.
