Definition

Serve as second officer aboard ship. 

Distinguishing Characteristics

Serve as second officer and third in command of an ocean research ship of approximately 2000 gross tons.

Typical Work

Stands bridge watches operating and navigating the ship;

Plans and teaches courses in seamanship and other marine specialties;

Orders and maintains ship's charts, publications and navigation supplies;

Prepares track of scientific cruises;

Serves as officer in charge of gyrocompass; maintains log and performs routine maintenance;

Responsible for readiness of electronic equipment; performs operating tests;

Serves as officer in charge of after-deck entering or leaving port or anchorage;

Stands security watch when required;

Performs related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

A U.S. Coast Guard Second Mate's license valid for operation of an inspected motor vessel of unlimited tonnage, upon ocean waters.
