Definition
Maintain and operate engineering department machinery aboard an ocean research ship of approximately 2000 gross tons.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under direct supervision, perform routine maintenance and operation of propulsion or auxiliary machinery aboard a ship.
Typical Work
Performs general maintenance, of ship's machinery and mechanical equipment;
Accomplishes minor repairs to hull fittings and structure;
Lubricates machinery;
Monitors operation of propulsion and auxiliary machinery to insure proper and safe operation;
Assists in the repair of marine machinery;
Enters readings in engineering log and operating records;
Stands security watch as required;
Performs related duties as required.
Legal Requirement(s)
U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's document endorsed with "Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED)-Oiler rating."
