Class Series Concept

Conduct diagnostic tests to determine the origin of sleep-related disorders. This series differs from the Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist series by its specialized and sole function of conducting sleep disorder studies.

Definition

First-level class of series. Under direct supervision, conduct sleep studies designated by supervisor.

Typical Work

Conduct designated sleep studies including overnight polysomnography (multiple montages), MSLT, MWT, supplemental O2 titration, pH monitoring, and portable sleep studies;

Welcome and educate patients about the study;

Select and implement appropriate configurations/procedures for the needs of the test;

Prepare the necessary equipment;

Connect patient to monitoring devices and sensors such as EEG electrodes, respiratory movement sensors, and penile tumescene monitors to collect sleep disorder data;

Monitor patient status throughout studies; respond appropriately to patient needs and changes in well-being including cardiovascular distress, seizures, and psychological distress;

Listen to, document, and appropriately triage patient needs;

Review completed test studies with supervisor; complete post-test documentation;

Identify and report environmental, equipment and engineering issues;

Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications

Graduate of an AMA-approved school of respiratory care, electroencephalogram diagnostics or polysomnography

AND

Certified in CPR

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
