PEDORTHIST TRAINEE

Class Series Concept

Provide patient care through the assessment and delivery of pedorthic devices.

Definition

Assesses, fits, and delivers pedorthic devices, while implementing treatment plans and providing follow-up care.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under direct supervision learn to assess, fit, and deliver pedorthic devices while assisting with patient assessment, treatment plans, and follow ups.

Typical Work

Assists with patient assessment needs based on prescription, including physical condition, gait, posture, and skin integrity.

Helps with designs, fabrications, and fits devices such as:
• Therapeutic shoes and modifications
• Foot orthoses, including subtalar-control
• Partial foot prostheses (e.g., transmetatarsal)

Supports the development and implementation treatment plans to improve function and reduce limitations.

Verifies prescriptions, sets goals, and documents care.

Educates patients on device use and maintenance.

Supports coordination with other healthcare professionals as needed for optimal outcomes.

With assistance, monitors pedorthic outcomes, adjusts treatment as needed, updates long-term plans, and ensures patient understanding of device use.

Completes documentation and billing paperwork accurately and efficiently.

Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: Basic lower limb anatomy, common foot conditions, pedorthic treatment methods, materials and fabrication of orthotic devices, and principles of therapeutic footwear.

Ability to: Assist with patient assessments and device fittings; follow prescriptions and treatment plans; use hand and basic power tools safely; observe and document patient outcomes; communicate device use and care to patients; complete documentation accurately; and collaborate effectively within a clinical team.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Completion of a National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) approved pedorthic education program

AND

Certification by the American Board for Certification in Pedorthics within 6 months from hire

AND

Six months’ experience involving customer service OR involving direct patient care.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
