Definition
Assesses, fits, and delivers pedorthic devices, while implementing treatment plans and providing follow-up care.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under general supervision provides assessment, fit and delivery of pedorthic devices, such as therapeutic shoes, shoe modifications for therapeutic purposes, and partial foot prostheses. This includes patient assessment, implementation of treatment plan, and follow up for fitting and use.
Typical Work
Fabricates and delivers pedorthic devices, including therapeutic shoes, shoe modifications, partial foot prostheses, foot orthoses, and subtalar-control foot orthoses.
Performs comprehensive assessment of patient or prescription needs for pedorthic intervention, including evaluation of physical condition, circulation, skin integrity, posture, gait, pain, and environmental factors.
Implements treatment plans by collecting assessment data, selecting materials, fabricating pedorthic devices, fitting and adjusting devices, and educating patients on proper use and care.
Formulates individualized treatment plans to alleviate functional limitations and improve mobility, including verification of prescriptions, setting of clinical goals, and selection of appropriate devices.
Monitors outcomes, documents functional changes, makes necessary modifications, reassesses patient goals, and develops long-term care strategies.
Ensures patient understanding of device wear schedules, safety considerations, and maintenance to promote successful outcomes.
Consults with or refers to other healthcare professionals when necessary for appropriate patient care.
Completes documentation and billing paperwork accurately and efficiently.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: anatomy, biomechanics, and gait analysis relevant to orthotic and pedorthic treatment; clinical assessment techniques including evaluation of skin integrity, circulation, and posture; types, functions, and appropriate use of pedorthic devices; materials and fabrication methods for therapeutic footwear and foot orthoses; ABC scope of practice and clinical documentation standards; infection control procedures and patient safety protocols; principles of treatment planning and outcome measurement.
Ability to: assess and interpret clinical information related to pedorthic needs; fit, fabricate, and adjust therapeutic and prefabricated devices; implement and follow treatment plans; communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare providers; instruct patients in proper device use and care; maintain accurate records and documentation; work independently under general supervision; exercise sound clinical judgment and maintain professional conduct in patient care settings.

Desirable Qualifications
Completion of a National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education approved pedorthic education program
Certification by the American Board for Certification in Pedorthics
Twelve months experience involving customer service OR involving direct patient care.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
