Definition

Lead work of assigned drafting personnel and assist in drafting office management. Prepare complex scale maps, detailed plans and working drawings from sketches, field notes, or general instructions.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Duties performed at this level are primarily lead over drafting personnel; may also perform highly complex engineering drafting.

Typical Work

Lead and train drafting technicians in a drafting section;

Schedule, assign and review work of drafting personnel;

Lead the preparation of design detail and assembly drawings for use in construction of various equipment and buildings;

Establish and supervise the maintenance of engineering specification and drawing files;

Adopt and implement new drafting techniques and processes;

Confer with professional and technical personnel on drafting requirements and procedures;

Assist in engineering design and layout problems;

Coordinate, print and document reproduction operations;

Lead other drafting technicians in highly complex engineering and drafting projects; perform all of the duties of a Drafting Technician II;

Perform related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Three years of full-time experience or training as a Drafting Technician, or equivalent. 

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. 

Examination Requirements: 

  • A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability and other elements which are established through job analysis.
