Definition

Coordinate the privileged and confidential institutional review and approval process of proposed research activities involving human subjects to protect their safety, rights and welfare.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Single class no series. Under general direction, serve as member, with vote, on Human Subjects Review Committee. Perform complex duties to facilitate the review and approval process, such as use of judgment in independent interpretation and application of relevant Federal and State laws, regulations and institutional policies and guidelines, committee requirements, and review and approval of administrative and procedural modifications of applications.

Typical Work

Serve as ex-officio member, with vote, on Human Subjects Review Committee(s), to present evaluations, recommendations, historical information and precedents regarding compliance with laws, regulations, and ethical and safety standards; 

Interpret and apply Federal and State laws, regulations and institutional policies and guidelines relevant to the use of human subjects in research proposals; 

Communicate committee requests to investigators for additional information and revisions and review responses; 

Prepare correspondence, reports, agendas, and certifications of review for funding agencies related to review and approval process; 

Independently review and approve administrative and procedural modifications; reconcile proposals for funding with the approved Human Subjects Review Committee Applications; facilitate approval for emergency or unique opportunity situations; 

Advise faculty, staff, and students in preparation of applications for research proposals involving human subjects and consent documents; 

Coordinate review of proposals for public and private research agencies; 

Direct the work of others; 

Provide orientation and training to new Human Subjects Review Committee members, investigators, and departments; 

Assist in program development, implementation, and evaluation; 

May act in the absence of the program manager; 

Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree

AND 

Two years applicable work experience 

Equivalent education/experience.
