Definition

Performs volume and custom sewing work in making, altering or mending clothing, costumes, and accessories.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general supervision, performs full range of clothing/costume construction including, patterning, making alterations or repairs, and maintaining items.

Typical Work

Orders, stores, and safeguards linens, equipment, and supplies; maintains records;

Makes, fits, mends, and alters articles of clothing, costumes, and accessories;

Drafts and produces draperies and privacy curtains;

Measures individuals for garments;

Operates power sewing, cutting, marking, and buttonhole machines;

Assists in maintenance of equipment and enforcement of safety regulations regarding the operation;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: sewing methods and equipment; use of patterns; grade and qualities of textiles; maintenance of sewing machines.

Ability to: use, adjust and maintain various power sewing machines and attachments and power cutter; do hand sewing; make, cut out and sew by patterns or create a garment/item without a pattern; instruct students or patients in use and care of sewing equipment and general sewing work; perform volume sewing work and plan and schedule work effectively; follow oral and written instructions; keep routine records.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

One year of experience or training in sewing, preferably on a volume basis, including use of power sewing machines.

OR

Two years college training in costume or vocational sewing, pattern making, and fabric cutting.

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
