Definition

Sets up, operates, and maintains a variety of specialized bindery equipment in a high volume, large format (over 22”) offset print shop.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class function at the fully qualified journey level and independently operate equipment specific to this class.  Positions are distinguished from those in the Printing and Duplication Specialist series in that they are found in a high volume, offset print shop characterized by specialized, high speed finishing equipment capable of complex finishing of large format (over 22”) print jobs.

Positions at this level set up, operate and maintain equipment from the following list a majority of the time:

  • 18 inch and smaller folders
  • Scitex inkjet labeler/tabber
  • Duplo collator booklet maker
  • Hand fed gang stitcher/saddlestitcher
  • Single head and multiple head drilling machines
In addition, positions assist Bindery Specialists 1 with machine set up and provide trade specific guidance and training on set up and operation.

Typical Work

Sets up, operates, and maintains a variety of bindery equipment;

Hand feeds gang stitchers and saddle stitchers;

Operates and maintains hand bindery equipment such as casing-in machines, case makers, end sheet turners, and hydraulic presses;

Assists higher level Bindery Specialists with the feeding, take off, quality inspection, and boxing off of more complex equipment;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  materials, methods, and equipment used in bindery work and available product options.

Ability to:  interpret and follow oral and written instructions; operate the specific tools and equipment used in the area of expertise, including related tools and equipment; meet deadlines and production requirements and perform bindery activities quickly and accurately without regular direction.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent

                                                                                AND

One year of experience as a Bindery Specialist 1 or one year of bindery experience in a commercial print shop.
