Class Series Concept

Positions in this class series either supervise or perform warehouse functions in a central warehouse or a major area within a large warehouse.  These positions are located in separate buildings devoted to receiving, storing and shipping supplies, equipment, furnishings or provisions.

Definition

This is the first level of the series. Positions at this level perform manual labor and routine clerical work in warehouse functions such as receiving, storing, and issuing that require heavy lifting and operating material handling equipment such as forklift trucks. Work is performed under general supervision. 

Typical Work

Unloads, unpacks, moves, and loads materials and equipment; inspects incoming items to verify conditions and quantities received; 

Prepares stock identification tags bearing coded information; places stock in proper storage locations; rotates stock as necessary; 

Gathers items from stock, verifies descriptions, and issues materials, including flammable and hazardous materials, and equipment to fill appropriate requisitions; 

Operates self-propelled lift trucks, hand trucks, dollies, and other loading and moving equipment used in warehouse activities; 

Takes physical inventories; 

Drives trucks, up to and including two and one half ton trucks, to make deliveries to nearby areas; 

Operates an automated order processing system; 

Files purchase orders, directives, requisitions, receiver's reports and correspondence; 

Issues supplies, electronic parts and components from storage locations according to approved requisitions; prepare requisitions and purchase requests for supply items as directed; 

Performs duties involved in maintenance, arrangement and cleanliness of the warehouse/worksite and its equipment. 

Performs other duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Desirable Qualifications

Positions typically require a High School graduation or GED Certificate and physical ability to do required work and six months of clerical or technical experience in retail clerking, warehousing, stock keeping, shipping, or receiving and operation of material handling equipment.
