Definition

Supervise Histotechnologists and Histologic Technicians in procedures to aid in the diagnosis and management of patients; evaluate quality of work performed in the laboratory; develop and monitor budget(s).

Distinguishing Characteristics

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary actions; teach residents and coordinate teaching of other laboratory personnel; develop and monitor budget(s).

Typical Work

Implement and monitor quality assurance programs for the laboratory; establish quality control standards; identify problems and take corrective action; 

Develop and monitor budget(s); 

Determine appropriate patient fees; process billing; review and respond to patient inquiries about billing; 

Prepare reports of laboratory activities including workload and quality assurance; 

Train laboratory personnel in safe handling of biological specimens and chemicals; 

Develop and evaluate new laboratory procedures; 

Evaluate and select equipment for purchase; order and oversee utilization of supplies; 

Ensure all maintenance on instruments and equipment is completed; establish and renew maintenance contracts;

Develop and maintain procedure manuals; 

Perform the work of Histotechnologist; 

Perform related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Certified as a Histotechnologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists AND two years of experience directing the operation of a laboratory 

OR 

Certified as a Histologic Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists AND four years of experience overseeing the operation of a laboratory. 

Experience/education which demonstrates comparable skills may substitute for the certification requirement. 

OR 

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
