Definition

Functions as a fully qualified, professional librarian or archivist, and independently performs a variety of professional librarian or archivist duties.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the journey level of the series. Positions at this level work under general supervision and independently exercise judgment and discretion within established parameters. Impact of decisions and judgements are generally limited and are within established precedents.

Typical Work

Provides assistance in collection management including arrangement and description, records accessioning and storage, audits and holdings, and records disposition;

Monitors use of collection and identifies records requiring preservation; initiates and supervises indexing and projects to enhance access to the collection;

Develops and maintains a collection by selecting materials for inclusion in the collection;

Create materials, programs and events that introduce and market collections and services to targeted audiences;

Creates and implements projects to increase digital access to materials;

Performs original descriptive and subject cataloging and classification in accordance with established cataloging rules;

Provides research services and resolves research inquiries; consults finding aids and interprets them for researchers; monitors researchers to assure adherence to collections use and security procedures; guides researchers to other sources for records, publications, and information;

Create content for and maintain websites;

Assigns call numbers to library materials;

Develops training and instructs other staff and patrons;

Creates publications and resource materials;

Hosts tours and special visits;

May supervise, lead, train, and direct the work of lower level staff, student employees, volunteers, or interns.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: theories, principles and practices of the library or archives profession; techniques of collection management, records management; classification, cataloging, reference and research.

Ability to: use and explain library or archives services, compile data, reports or surveys; ability to analyze situations correctly; meet the public and establish effective cooperative relationships; communicate effectively; interact courteously with customers; work effectively in a team environment.

Legal Requirement(s)

All librarian positions must meet the provisions of Title 300-12 WAC Certification of Librarians and RCW 27.04.055 Qualifications of Librarians-Rules-Fees.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Positions require a Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited program and certification by the State Librarian authorized through the Office of the Secretary of State; or certification by professional portfolio as authorized through the Office of the Secretary of State and one year experience as a professional librarian.

Master’s degree involving archives and records management, history or related field and one year experience as a professional archivist.
