Definition

This is the journey level of the series. Working under general supervision, positions are responsible for the supervision and training of incarcerated workers within the Correctional Industries operations training programs. Incumbents perform their work independently and are competent to resolve issues within their area of responsibility.

Typical Work

Typical Work

Plans and schedules production based on a master schedule; schedules materials, machinery, and workers to meet completion dates;

Operates/maintains all machinery and equipment required to meet production needs; trains incarcerated workers in the operation/maintenance of equipment;

Provides input for the development of annual operating forecast; responsible for operating within established forecast; maintains control over assigned inventory; controls waste;

Responsible for quality workmanship; adheres to quality standards;

Recommends design and engineering improvements to product/service;

Uses proprietary software, process, and procedures to determine needed purchases of raw materials, equipment, and supplies;

Develops and operates preventative maintenance program for equipment;

Accounts for assigned incarcerated workers in accordance with security requirements; ensures plant operations meet Department security requirements; maintains tool control;

Participates in product management and development teams as assigned;

Operates a safety accident prevention program in accordance with Department policy; ensures staff and incarcerated workers receive safety training and adhere to safe work practices;

Hires and evaluates performance of incarcerated workers or assigned staff for production unit; ensures incarcerated workers or assigned staff personnel actions are managed in accordance with Department policy directives;

Manages operation in accordance with Department policies and Correctional Industries directives;

Positions may lead or supervise lower-level staff;

Performs other duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or GED and three years of experience in the production, or service unit of a business or manufacturing operation.

College coursework may be substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
