Definition

Inspects small construction projects for compliance with specifications.

Typical Work

Inspects comfort stations, bath houses, park ranger residences, group kitchens, squad huts, barrier dams, cement ponds, bridges, pipe line construction, pumping installation, and other construction projects during and after construction for compliance with plans and specifications, quality of materials and workmanship, and adherence to State and local codes and ordinances;

Inspects existing structures for repair and remodeling, involving use of capital outlay funds; inspects remodeling and repair as accomplished by contractors;

Prepares specifications for small repair and remodeling projects;

May advertise and let small construction contracts;

Travels on inspection duties on State wide basis;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  standards, principles, and practices in building trades; blueprints and specifications; building, zoning, fire, and safety codes.

Ability to: inspect small buildings or other structures and detect noncompliance with plans, specifications, State or local codes, and contracts; detect materials and workmanship of poor quality; instruct architects and contractors as to needed changes; obtain highest quality buildings for least expense; draft minor specifications, plans, and change orders; travel frequently and for extended periods.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of experience as a building construction inspector, an electrical inspector, a plumbing inspector, or a journeyman carpenter.

OR

Three years of experience in general construction work, provided that at least one year of experience included interpretation of construction plans and specifications

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
