Definition

Independently functions as a fully qualified journey level electrician, as defined under Washington Administrative Code, to perform skilled installation, maintenance, and repair work on low voltage electrical equipment and systems of 750 volts or less such as interior wiring and cables, connections for electric machines, switches and controls, fuse boxes, breaker panels, distribution and instrument panels, buzzer and bell circuits, hearing and power circuits, and distribution systems. Unusual problems may be brought to higher-level electricians for resolution.

Typical Work

Installs, modifies, maintains, and repairs interior wiring and cables, connections for electric machines, switches and controls, fuse boxes, breaker panels, distribution and instrument panels, buzzer and bell circuits, and hearing and power circuits;

Installs, adjusts, maintains, modifies and repairs electric motors, equipment, and instruments such as pumps, clocks, lamps, X-ray machines, stoves, timers, air conditioners, fans, metering devices, power tools, motors and generators, and refrigerators;

Rewinds coils and armatures; dresses and polishes commutators; seats and replaces brushes; replaces worn out bearings and other motor and generator parts;

Inspects electric systems and equipment to detect and correct faulty or worn out parts;

Inspects electrical systems; checks wires, poles, and transformers and keeps lines cleared of tree limbs and brush;

Performs alterations, adjustments, modifications, repairs and installations of electrical equipment systems. Estimates materials and time needed to complete jobs;

Drives service trucks as required; loads and unloads materials and supplies;

May direct and instruct helpers, patients, or inmates;

May supervise lower level staff.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of electrical trade; electrical codes; safety precautions; basic computer skills.

Ability to: work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs; use hand and power tools.

Legal Requirement(s)

Current Washington State EL01 License/Certificate issued by the Department of Labor and Industries.

Desirable Qualifications

One year of experience as a journey-level certified electrician.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
