Definition

Direct the daily operations of a diagnostic medical ultrasound department; coordinate clinical, research, and educational programs; supervise diagnostic medical sonographers and other assigned staff; independently perform, evaluate and document results of highly complex non-invasive and invasive diagnostic ultrasound and physiological examinations on patients;. provide diagnostic observations and develop oral and/or /written reports for attending physicians.

Distinguishing Characteristics

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations, and recommend disciplinary action. 

Under general direction, supervise diagnostic medical sonographers and other assigned staff; develop clinical and educational programs; and participate in budget planning and development.

Typical Work

Assign clinical and research patient examinations to staff; plan for allocation of staff and equipment necessary to meet patient examination scheduling requirements; 

Develop procedure protocol with medical director; 

Coordinate department operation with hospital departments and medical community in support of department staff to assure continuity of patient care; oversee daily clinical caseload; participate in the prioritization of patient examinations; 

Act as liaison for the department with clinical, ancillary hospital and health sciences personnel, nursing units, medical community health care specialists and medical equipment manufacturer representatives; 

Review, develop, implement, and assess new procedures, based on changing technology; maintain laboratory procedures manual; 

Collaborate with department manager and medical director to establish laboratory policies; 

Maintain inventory control of equipment and supplies; authorize purchase orders; 

Oversee the daily performance of diagnostic equipment; ensure operational safety; coordinate repair services with clinical caseload;  

Evaluate and recommend new diagnostic ultrasound equipment; oversee evaluation of prototype equipment and/or equipment software; maintain documentation of evaluation protocols; assure confidentiality of proprietary information; 

Participate in formal and inservice departmental training programs and demonstrate specific techniques and equipment;  

Participate in the development of a department budget; monitor expenditure of funds; 

Coordinate department participation in the quality assurance program; identify areas for evaluation; oversee monitoring and data collection; develop and implement actions for correction; 

Develop and implement rotating sonographer call schedule;  

Perform the duties of diagnostic medical sonographers; 

Perform related duties as required.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Completion of diagnostic ultrasound program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and registered in abdominal and obstetrical ultrasound by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) 

AND 

Five years of experience performing the work of a diagnostic medical sonographer 

Equivalent education/experience.
