Definition

At the fully qualified journey level, prepares electronic files for printing on high speed digital equipment.  Builds run ready electronic files by checking for potential issues with incoming customer files.  Processes incoming job tickets for digital print centers, estimates jobs, plans jobs, schedules work, and orders needed materials.  Positions utilize equipment hardware and software to ensure jobs are set up in accordance with customer specifications.

 

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions are distinguished from the Digital Printing Specialist by the additional responsibility of preparing incoming electronic files for printing on high speed digital equipment. As files arrive, positions check for potential problems, build run ready files for all incoming artwork, convert files to PDFs from hard copy or native files, and make corrections to incoming proofs. Processes incoming job tickets for digital print centers, estimates job, plans job, schedules work, and orders needed materials.

Positions are distinguished from the Prepress Specialist by the end user of the support provided. Digital Printing Technicians support high speed digital printers while Prepress Specialists support the offset printing function.

Positions in this class perform Digital Printing Specialist work as needed; however, this will not constitute the majority of the position.

Typical Work

Prepares electronic files for printing on high speed digital printing equipment;

Reviews incoming files, checking for potential problems with printing and insuring integrity, printability, and accuracy;

Builds run ready files from all incoming types of artwork;

Converts files to PDFs from hard copies and native files;

Makes corrections to incoming proofs;

Processes incoming job tickets for digital print centers, estimates job, plans job, schedules work, and orders needed materials;

Manages digital print center electronic file system;

Consults with customers;

Performs duties of Digital Printing Specialist as needed;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: contemporary high speed digital printing equipment and print technology devices; finishing/bindery processes; functional abilities of equipment available for work.

Ability to: set up digital files; create postscript files; apply written instructions to machine set up and maintenance; utilize mathematical skills to correctly process and record jobs; maintain a high level of technological expertise with changes in technology; communicate effectively with customers, staff, and management both verbally and in writing.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent         

                                                                        AND

Three years of experience operating high speed digital printing equipment with network training.
