Definition

Performs skilled carpentry work and supervises lower-level Carpenters performing carpentry, general maintenance and/or new construction work.

In the Department of Corrections, positions at this level directing a crew of incarcerated individuals either are limited to two positions per institution or must direct crews consisting of three or more incarcerated individuals.

Typical Work

Plans, lays out, directs and inspects work of crew of carpenters, related tradesworkers and laborers or crew of incarcerated individuals engaged in construction, maintenance and repair of structures, walls, floors, windows, screens, sashes, doors, furniture, fixtures, stairs, cupboards, roofs and cabinets;

Performs skilled carpentry work;

Recommends repairs and consults with supervisors and others on projects; determines material and personnel requirements;

Keeps records and submits reports;

Read plans and blueprints; inspect projects to ensure compliance with local codes; determine scope of work, materials needed, and their cost and availability; orders materials; schedules, and/or coordinates equipment;

Assist in the development of the departmental budget;

Develop and conduct preventative maintenance programs on buildings and facilities;

Enforce safety rules and regulations; maintain records on work performed; write reports as required;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment of carpentry trade; lumber types and grades; safety precautions; record keeping; basic computer skills.

Ability to: read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans and sketches; estimate materials and personnel needed to complete protect; supervise crew of carpenters or incarcerated individuals. Prepare reports; issue clear direction orally and in writing.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of full time work as journey level carpenter. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
