This program supports the safe and efficient transportation of common school children to and from school with an operating allocation that funds salaries for bus operators, mechanics, supervision, and training. Included in the operating allocation are monies for fuel, office and shop equipment, and vehicle maintenance. Depreciation funds are provided to assist school districts with the replacement of school buses. The Superintendent is responsible for establishing, and ensuring compliance with, minimum requirements for Washington’s 10,600 school bus drivers, including the issuance of approximately 1,700 new school bus driver authorizations each year. In addition, funding is provided for: Regional Transportation Coordinators to provide technical assistance to school districts; the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the administration of the statewide pupil transportation program; and initial and in service training for school bus drivers.
