Heating Conversion Project

40000005

Funds the partial design and phase 1 of the Heating Conversion Project. The university currently relies on a 75+ year old gas-fired central steam plant and distribution system to heat most of its facilities. The plant accounts for 97% of the university’s greenhouse gas emissions. The Heating Conversion Project will create several independent plants/nodes, each serving a different portion of the campus, using a combination of heat pumps, heat recovery chillers, and air-cooled chillers; natural gas for emergencies and peak heating days; and a geo-exchange field at each nodal plant to store thermal energy. Requests in the four subsequent biennia for design and construction will complete the project.
