Definition
As a summer, intermittent, or part-time intern, assists in customer support, applications development, and/or systems development, or participates in other technology related activities OR in a training capacity, may serve in a variety of areas within the information technology field.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This intern position is intended to encourage development of practical skills for those currently enrolled in a vocational or college program in the information technology field OR this entry level position is intended to be used on an in-training basis, providing incumbents on-the-job training in beginning level computer programming, hardware/software installation, desktop support, systems support and customer consulting. Work at this level is closely supervised and designed to provide training for incumbents.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.
Desirable Qualifications
High school graduate or GED equivalent AND proficiency in information technology gained through experience or training in a computer technology such as: word-processing software, spreadsheet software, database programs, hardware installation, programming, web authoring tools, graphics design, etc.
OR
Students of accredited colleges who have completed their freshman year or are currently enrolled in a vocational technical program in the information technology field.
Note: This class is restricted to summer, intermittent, or part-time internships for persons actively pursuing a course of study leading to an information technology related degree or equivalent certificate OR this class shall be used with approved in-training plan.
