Advise and assist students and prospective students in planning a program of study designed to achieve their academic goals.

Under general direction, assist students in planning their academic program.  Advise and/or refer those students encountering academic and/or personal problems affecting their course of study.

Explain course offering and prerequisite requirements; interpret institutional/departmental policies and degree and transfer requirements; 

Determine eligibility for students' admission; explain course equivalence for credits earned from other schools; 

Approve adding courses, dropping courses, and withdrawals; approve exceptions to certain rules within established guidelines such as approve all morning classes for students having to work afternoons; 

Check student progress toward degree; review and approve graduation applications; 

Assist in development, preparation and updating of advising materials; 

Give presentations to prospective students and parents; participate in career and college fairs and student orientations; 

Update and maintain a computerized database for advising purposes; 

Maintain automated and manual records of student progress and prepare reports as required; 

Answer telephone inquiries and correspondence regarding entrance and degree requirements, course content and related information; 

Refer students to on- or off-campus services; 

Provide career and placement information; 

Perform related duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

High school graduation or equivalent

AND 

Two years of work in student services or related area  

Equivalent education/experience.
