Definition
Produce copy for graphic layout and reproduction.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Journey-level class of series. Operate electronic phototypesetting equipment to produce galleys of type.
Typical Work
Transform rough draft into phototype copy; select proper line length, leading, kerning, font and type style;
Maintain disk files;
Proof copy, make corrections in grammar, punctuation and format;
Compose and arrange text according to job specifications;
Process exposed photo paper;
Paste up copy;
Perform user maintenance on typesetting equipment and processor;
Consult with persons initiating job specifications and suggest revisions in treatment of data;
May train others on use of photo-direct composing equipment;
May operate other equipment associated with typesetting and graphic layout;
Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications
Two years of experience in production phototypesetting and layout, or equivalent.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
