Definition

Process requests and schedule media material, equipment, and operators.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general direction, coordinate the day-to-day acquisition and circulation of media material and equipment and:  

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of Media Assistants and/or others 

AND/OR 

Dispatch personnel and media equipment to provide assistance to instructors, academic and administrative personnel, student groups, conferences and special events.

Typical Work

Processes requests for films, video tapes, media equipment, media operators, and media materials such as CD-ROMS and laser disks for local usage and off campus rental of loan pool equipment; 

Catalogs new materials and maintains current listings and abstracts of all video tapes, slides, films, and other media; 

Inspects media materials and racks for correct shelving and proper care of collections; directs searches for lost items; plans space arrangements in racks; initiates requests for repairs; 

Advises faculty, staff, and others of available films, tapes and other media materials; takes and processes orders for new inventory; coordinates requests and initiates orders with vendors and other institutional libraries; maintains records and processes invoices for payment;

Inspects media materials for defects and/or damage; operates film rewinding, inspection, and splicing equipment; may perform minor repair to films and video tapes including insertion of replacement footage; 

Compiles statistical summaries of media activities; recommends changes to improve services; 

Conducts inventory and maintains computerized and/or manual inventory records, reports and purchase orders; stocks and places orders for supplies such as shipping cases, splicing tape and forms; 

Assists in budget development; 

Schedules and maintains a preview program for films and videos; 

May develop and maintain a training program and/or manual for staff and clients; 

Performs the duties of Media Assistants; 

Performs related duties as required.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation

AND 

One year of experience as a Media Assistant 2 

Equivalent education/experience.
