Class Series Concept

Positions in this series have primary responsibility for activities involving informational and tour/visitor services such as conducting, coordinating, or scheduling daily public tours, special group or VIP tours, and weekend visitor tours; and promoting visitor services activities.

Definition

Positions at this level serve as an informational resource including receiving, escorting, and assisting visitors, and conducting guided tours for a comprehensive tour services program.

Typical Work

Welcomes individuals and group visitors; provides information, explanations and guide services for buildings, facilities, exhibits, displays and collections; conducts daily public tours, special group tours and VIP tours;

Conducts tours for international visitors, including providing for special needs, coordinating activities with interpreters, making translated materials available, and providing input on how to improve services;

Conducts tours for visitors with disabilities, which includes being familiar with limitations of facilities, understanding special needs of visitors, and assisting with vehicles, parking, loading and unloading;

Promotes tour services by assisting with a community outreach program that includes a speaker’s bureau that visits schools and nursing homes; makes presentations to civic and service organizations;

Assists with training program for paid tour guides and volunteers; performs research for training materials; assists with development of multimedia presentations; leads formal training sessions and staff orientations;

Sells books, documents, artifacts, and souvenirs.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Positions typically require up to four years of volunteer or paid tour experience, or clerical/public contact experience.
