Definition

Plans and directs the operation of a large reproduction section.

Distinguishing Characteristics

In order for a position to be allocated to this class, it must meet at least two of the following criteria: (1) directs the staff of a reproduction section that uses bindery equipment and at least two items of printing equipment (lithographic press, systems duplicator, etc.); (2) manages a reproduction section with at least five subordinates, which must include at least one position in the class of Offset Duplicator Operator 2 or higher and one position in the Bindery Worker series; (3) coordinates the printing/duplicating activities for the Headquarters staff or on a statewide basis for an agency.

Typical Work

(The following are examples only. Other tasks of a similar level of difficulty and responsibility may be assigned. Also, performance of more difficult and responsible tasks may be required to aid in the development of the employee for future advancement.)

Plans, organizes and directs the operation of a reproduction section using a variety of reproduction machines, equipment and processes;

Reviews publications and writes specifications for new or replacement equipment; does long-range planning for future reproduction equipment and new products;

Coordinates plant schedule and output with departmental demands;

Continually analyzes operations to improve procedures, methods and production;

Prepares budget requests; reviews orders for supplies and materials; arranges for all purchase orders for supplies, equipment, machine repairs and vendor's supply contracts; prepares completed vendor's invoices for payment;

Maintains shop production records and establishes production and cost standards for various types of reproduction work; may have responsibilities for other support functions such as mail, stock room, etc.;

Advises other units of the department on matters relating to reproduction services available;

Performs other work as required.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Five years of experience in any combination of commercial or industrial photography, reprographics or lithography, including two years of paid experience in a supervisory capacity.

One year of experience as a Reproduction Supervisor 1.

Three years of experience as an Offset Duplicator Operator 3. 

Note:  Education in commercial or industrial photography, reprographics or lithography may be substituted, year for year, for up to two years of qualifying experience.
