Supervises Pre-sales check cruising staff; check cruises Forest Check Cruiser 1's, Forest Cruisers and others to maintain high standards of cruising accuracy; inspects all aspects of on-the-ground timber sales preparation; resolves disputes on contested or conflicting cruises.

Typical Work

Prepares cruising action plans for each fiscal year, assigns proposed timber sale cruising jobs to check cruisers and forest cruisers; reviews timber cruises made by area personnel and others; checks sales proposals; cruises proposed sale areas to resolve technical disagreements over value of standing timber under State control;

Holds formal and informal cruise training sessions; performs routine check cruises of Area timber sales to verify optimum sales, layout, road location, volume and grade estimation; checks environmental and stream protection considerations; reports any differences of opinions to proper authority or to immediate supervisor;

Sets up and maintains cruising plots for training and for qualification of applicants for different cruising positions;

Keeps informed on all methods of sampling timber, checks practicability of new methods;

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: timber cruising methods and procedures; timber sales layout, including selection of sales boundaries, road locations and locations of equipment setup points, factors influencing type and amount of logging equipment suitable for different sales; factors influencing extraction costs; marketability and use of tree species and grades common in Washington State; differences in nature of extent of timber stands of all major producing areas of State.

Ability to: supervise and plan; estimate tree heights and diameters; identify tree species and timber defect and estimate extent of defect; estimate timber grade and net volume; estimate road construction, logging and other extraction costs; cruise steep, remote terrain during inclement weather; travel frequently and for extended periods.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Three (3) years of experience as a Forest Check Cruiser 1.
