Definition

Positions in this level perform various housekeeping, custodial, and maintenance related tasks to ensure and maintain proper cleanliness of facilities, institutions and/or the Governor's mansion. Positions repair and replace various items, including but not limited to, light fixtures, switches, doors, hardware, windows, locks, etc. 

Typical Work

Repairs or replaces doors, hardware, windows, locks, gutters, benches, tables, desks, chairs, cabinets, etc.; 

Repairs and maintains electric powered janitorial tools and electric or gas powered lawn equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor polishers, floor scrubbers, hand mowers, riding lawn mowers, and edging tools; 

Repairs or replaces fixtures, furnishings, and any other miscellaneous objects; 

Paints small offices, latrines, kitchens, classrooms; 

Makes rounds, locking doors, closing windows, turning off lights and replacing burned out light bulbs; turns air conditioning and other equipment on and off;  

Moves furniture and equipment; arranges tables and chairs for special events; collects and disposes of garbage and trash; shovels snow and sweeps and washes sidewalks on an emergency basis; does occasional yard and garden chores such as mowing, weeding or raking leaves and debris;  

Improves work methods, knowledge of equipment, supplies and safety through participation in training sessions with supervisors;  

Maintains inventories and makes simple reports; requisitions supplies and equipment;  

May supervise lower level staff.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

The ability to do required work and the ability to read and write

AND 

Six months to one year experience in custodial, general or building maintenance, grounds keeping, or semi-skilled carpentry, electrical and/or plumbing repair work.  

Note: A valid Washington state driver's license may be required.
