Definition

Leads Food Service Workers and participates in the preparation and serving of food; or functions as a cook’s or baker’s helper.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Regularly assigns, instructs and checks the work of others; or functions as assistant to full-time cooks or bakers.

Typical Work

Performs duties as a cook’s or baker’s helper;

Serves as lead employee in food preparation, serving, and/or dishwashing and sanitation functions;

Prepares and cooks food;

Weighs, prepares, and serves meals to meet special diet requirements;

Performs duties such as hand trucking food, supplies, and equipment to and from dining areas, kitchen, storerooms, and refrigerators; loads and clears steam tables and carts; serves food individually or from steam tables or carts;

Performs cleaning duties; washes dishes and utensils; scrubs floors, walls, and counters in kitchen and dining areas; cleans garbage area; cleans and polishes silverware;

Sets up dining areas; sets and clears tables; arranges dining room furniture;

Sets up cash register or change box; collects cash or food tickets for meals; keeps records;

Operates standard kitchen appliances and equipment such as coffee maker, toaster, dish and glass washer, and mixers;

Assists cook in requisitioning food and supplies from commissary for kitchen use; checks for quantity and quality;

Performs other work as required;

May supervise or direct the work of others.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: operation and maintenance of kitchen and dining room; large scale preparation of food; personal hygiene, sanitation, and housekeeping practices; safety precautions; operation of standard kitchen appliances and equipment.

Ability to: lead staff; direct others in and perform food preparation, serving, and cleaning work; follow written and oral instructions; make change; keep simple records and receipts.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Possession of, or eligible for, a food handler’s permit AND one year of experience in quantity or institutional food preparation and serving

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
