Definition

At the fully qualified journey level, sets up, operates and maintains high speed production digital printing equipment to produce complete variable and/or copy projects. Operates high speed cut sheet or roll fed digital printing equipment with associated finishing options to produce high quality black and white or color print jobs. Positions utilize equipment hardware and software to set up jobs in accordance with customer specifications.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions are distinguished from the Digital Printing Operator by the nature of equipment used. The Digital Printing Operator operates one or more office machines while the Digital Printing Specialist operates equipment capable of higher volume, with faster speeds, and a more advanced computer interface. Positions assign complex print attributes to jobs through a computer interface.

Positions operate high speed production digital printing equipment capable of speeds of 125 or more pages per minute, a volume of 500,000 to 1,000,000 impressions per month, and with duty cycles of up to 5 million impressions. Positions set up digital files and create postscript files.

Positions perform daily/weekly/monthly maintenance on equipment and perform necessary high level service/maintenance to equipment as approved/supported by vendor to ensure optimum output. Positions troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate with vendor for repair of equipment as needed. Incumbents monitor and manage inventory of supplies and materials. Positions may perform basis finishing tasks.

Typical Work

Completes copy projects in compliance with job specifications and in accordance with program quality standards and procedures;

Operates all digital print center equipment needed to produce complete customized jobs as described on the job ticket in accordance with equipment operating procedures. Performs all other center functions needed to complete the job;

Carefully listens to needs on internal/external customers; provides advice on specific courses of actions; researches, assesses, and analyzes situations in order to meet customer requirements;

Ensures accurate billing to customers by making sure accurate “click”, materials, and hand time charges are recorded on all jobs. Correctly fills out and processes necessary paperwork;

Provides proper job packaging and takes necessary steps to ensure proper delivery to customer;

Identifies issues, assesses problems, and develops options and strategies to resolve problems, and takes action accordingly;

Understands and performs necessary troubleshooting procedures on all digital print center equipment;

Accurately reports time and log functions;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: contemporary high speed digital printing equipment and print technology devices; finishing/bindery processes; functional abilities of equipment available for work.

Ability to: set up digital files; create postscript files; apply written instructions to machine set up and maintenance; utilize mathematical skills to correctly process and record jobs; maintain a high level of technological expertise with changes in technology; communicate effectively with customers, staff, and management both verbally and in writing.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent

Two years of experience operating high speed digital printing equipment with network training.
