Definition

In a high volume, large format (over 22”) print shop, as a prepress specialist, translates text and image layout provided by designers and customers into finished pages that can be printed. Consults with customers in order to create an accurate facsimile of the artwork, images, illustrations, texts, and color of print product. Adjusts images and text in order to ensure high quality results. Creates plates used in offset printing utilizing a computer-to-plate device.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class are found in a high volume, large format print shop characterized by specialized, high speed offset and digital equipment producing large format (over 22” for offset and 14”x20” for digital) print jobs.

Positions utilize a variety of specialized typesetting, page layout, graphic, and scanning software operating on multiple computer platforms in the preparation and layout of forms, publications, brochures, and other display materials. Positions perform all required steps between the creation of a print layout and the final printing.

Typical Work

Outputs files from Postscript applications – scanning, ripping, trapping, impositions, proofing, image setting;

Creates press plates utilizing computer-to-plate equipment;

Retrieves customer files from digital archives;

Performs preflight on customer files for integrity, printability, and accuracy;

Edits and creates electronic imposition and layouts;

Maintains the calibration and quality levels of high end output devices;

Assists in establishing workflow solutions based on technological trends and software releases;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: materials, methods, workflow, and equipment/software used in prepress operations.

Ability to: interpret and follow oral and written instructions; operate the specific tools and equipment used in the area of expertise, including related tools and equipment; meet deadlines and production requirements and perform prepress activities quickly and accurately with limited direction.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent 

                                                                          AND

Two years of experience with prepress processes including preflighting, scanning, ripping, trapping, imposition, and computer-to-plate output.
