Definition

Provides medical care to patients that includes performing examinations, establishing diagnoses and determining appropriate treatment or referral for medical problems.  All treatment provided is within the scope of the applicable licensure. 

OR 

Leads and/or directs other medical specialists in a clinical area and acts as a unit liaison. 

Distinguishing Characteristics

This class is distinguished from Physician Assistant/Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner class by the level of accountability and the type of review required by the licensed physician under RCW 18.71A. 

OR

Regularly assigns, instructs and reviews the work of medical specialists and/or other assigned staff.  Positions function under general guidance of an attending physician.

Typical Work

Subject to the supervision of an authorized physician, examines patients and diagnoses their illnesses; recommends and administers routine medical treatment; refers difficult and complex cases to the supervising physician and assists in further examination; 

Assists in instructing and supervising nurses, technicians and personnel assigned for special training; attends and participates in clinics and staff conferences on surgical, medical and mental conditions of various patients and their diagnosis and treatment; 

Directs the preparation and maintenance of schedules and staff assignments; 

Develops and prepares reports; 

Conducts needs assessments; 

Acts as a unit liaison with community agencies; 

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  methods and principles of general medicine; methods of diagnosing and treating more common medical and/or mental disorders; hospital organization and procedures; social work and rehabilitation therapies. 

Ability to:  examine, diagnose and recommend treatment of physical diseases and deficiencies; interpret laboratory analyses and X-rays; prepare comprehensive case histories; lead and/or direct other professionals.

Legal Requirement(s)

A valid Washington State license to practice as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner

OR

A valid Physician Assistant license by the Washington Board of Medical Examiners 

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. 

Desirable Qualifications

Licensure as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in the state of Washington; a Master’s Degree in a related field and one year experience in the medical field 

OR

Graduation from a Physician Assistant training program approved by the Washington State Board of Medical Examiners and Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants; eligible for registration as a Physician’s Assistant in the state of Washington.
