Class Series Concept

Positions in this series compile information from various databases and computer systems and provide reports and analysis based on agency/institution data processing and analytical requirements. 

Definition

Under general supervision, performs entry level data consultant activities to assist higher level data consultants and/or managers in performing computing, comparing and reporting of data in support of reports, studies, surveys and forecasts.  Develops and prepares narrative reports.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Performs routine data compilation and research analysis such as:

  • Evaluating data, graphs, tables and charts. 
  • Sourcing report data from a variety of known areas.
  • Developing extraction methods for conducting data mining by creating database queries.
  • Reviewing data for completeness, compiling, tabulating, making computations and preparing summaries. 
  • Preparing narrative reports to accompany data. 

Typical Work

Extracts data through data mining techniques from multiple systems across various departments;  

Develops data queries to extract data; 

Manipulates and analyzes data to create statistical reports; 

Notes trends and presents recommendations;  

Designs report formats and composes accompanying narrative reports including the identification and evaluation of issues and resolutions;  

Reviews and/or assists in revising forms to collect or display data; 

Works with staff to collect, review and classify data in evaluating and determining future research development plans;  

Reviews data for accuracy and completeness;  

Collects and compiles data for budget review and preparation;  

Tabulates numerical data for accuracy and completeness and prepares numerical summaries, organizational charts, work flow charts and graphs;  

Compares data from various sources to identify trends, differences and similarities,

May provide information or assistance to employees, public, community organizations or other governmental agencies/institutions; 

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: basic statistics and associated math; techniques for collecting, compiling and evaluating data; office practices and procedures; report writing; and chart and graph preparation.  

Ability to: analyze data to determine common content and which variables best apply; analyze data and summarize findings; and work with others in developing programs and plans.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree, including college-level course work in statistics and/or mathematics or one year of work experience in statistics, analysis, or research

Equivalent education/experience.
