Definition

Leads assigned personnel and transcribes, proofreads and edits complex medical reports using digital or machine dictation and word processing equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Regularly assigns, instructs, and checks the work of others.  Under general supervision, coordinates with medical staff for chart completion and performs administrative duties such as preparing statistical summaries, maintaining supply inventory, and assisting with budget preparation.

Typical Work

Coordinates with medical staff and transcription staff to complete charts; 

Prepares departmental reports and statistical summaries; 

Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures; 

Develops and implements training programs for new hires and existing personnel;

Orients medical staff to departmental procedures and policies; 

Ensures equipment is maintained and repaired as needed; 

Assists in preparation of the departmental budget; 

May coordinate vacation schedules; 

Performs the duties of a Medical Transcriptionist  2; 

Performs related duties as required.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

High School graduation or equivalent

AND

three years of occupational-level medical transcription experience, including two years of experience utilizing terminology of multiple body systems or in a multi-specialty department.  Certified medical transcriptionist credentialing may substitute for one year of experience.  Completion of an accredited medical transcriptionist course or equivalent may substitute for six months of experience.

Equivalent education/experience.
