Definition

Positions in this level perform multiple duties relating to the care and maintenance of grounds, greenhouses, nurseries, or gardening programs.  Positions may be involved in working with a crew of juveniles or young adults focusing on litter control, recycling activities, and distributing program-related materials at special events; educating youth crews in the environmental ethics of recycling and litter control.  Positions may be involved in sprinkler irrigation and the maintenance of a grounds maintenance program.  Positions may also manage a small gardening program or a major division in a large gardening program. Propagates and cares for trees, shrubs, and forage plants.  Performs soil analysis, receives and ships plants, maintains growth records on propagations.

Typical Work

Supervises median crew activities;

Transports self and crew to and from work locations via assigned vehicle;

Operates and maintains assigned vehicle;

Coordinates with the Department of Transportation in cleaning median and utilizing DOT equipment;

Maintains adequate supplies and materials inventory;

Diagnoses and treats plant diseases and pests;

Prepares bedding areas by sterilizing and mixing soils, cleaning bedding tables and sterilizing pots and containers used in nursery culture;

Propagates plants by cutting, seeding, grafting, layering and budding;

Plans, prepares, plants, feeds, waters, prunes and maintains flower beds and landscaped areas;

Analyzes soil for PH content; takes tissue samples for analysis;

May repair, maintain and operate a variety of grounds mechanical equipment, systems, and apparatus;

Installs, maintains, repairs, and adjusts various sprinkler systems and control devices;

May supervise, direct, or lead other employees and helpers;

Formulates and presents recommendations for layout or improvements of grounds;

Converts quotas of seedlings, bouquets, potted plants, and cutflower arrangements to square footage of greenhouse and cold frame planting and to species and quantities of seeds; submits requests for all necessary supplies and equipment;

May participate in formulating annual operating plans for large greenhouse and takes principal responsibility for executing plans schedules planning dates and other work to coincide with seasons and plant life cycles;

May supervise lower level staff.

Desirable Qualifications

Positions typically require graduation from high school or equivalent and at least two years’ experience working with youth, gardening or in grounds maintenance.
