Definition

Supervises Laundry Workers and/or directs a crew of inmates of correctional institutions and performs laundry work.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general supervision, assigns and monitors work to ensure production schedule coordination.  Positions supervise laundry production employees in all phases of laundry processing and delivery. 

In the Department of Corrections, positions at this level directing a crew of inmates either are limited to two, positions per institution or must direct crews consisting of three or more inmates.

Typical Work

Supervises and trains employees or inmates in laundry operations; instructs students, patients or inmates in routine laundry work; 

 

With delegated authority, interviews and recommends selection of applicants, trains new employees, assigns and schedules work, acts upon leave requests, conducts annual performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary action; 

 

Prepares bleaching, starching, blueing and sterilizing solutions; 

 

Operates and maintains washing machines, extractors, mangles and presses; 

 

Reports potential or actual equipment malfunctions; 

 

Counts, marks, sorts, folds, bundles and ties laundry; arranges for its distribution; 

 

Maintains record of supplies used and on hand; requisitions supplies and equipment parts; 

 

Performs other work as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:  large-scale laundry practices, procedures and equipment; laundry sanitation and safety standards used in operation and care of laundry equipment; preparation and use of bleaches, soaps, starches and disinfectant compounds. 

Ability to:  supervise and train employees, students, patients or inmates in performing variety of laundry work; operate and maintain laundry equipment; maintain records; prepare reports; follow written and oral instructions.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

One year of experience in institution or commercial laundry.

OR

 Equivalent education/experience.
