Perform phlebotomy on patients to obtain laboratory specimens.
Definition
Collect blood specimens and perform simple laboratory procedures.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Under general supervision, following established standards and practices, collect blood from patients; instruct patients in the procedure for the collection of specimens.
Typical Work
Prepare patient and collection equipment according to established procedures for blood collection; verify patient identification;
Instruct patients in the procedure for collecting urine and stool specimens;
Assist with inventory and ordering of supplies;
Perform simple laboratory procedures such as bleeding time, whole blood prothrombin time, whole blood glucose determinations and setting up bacterial cultures; calibrate and perform preventive maintenance to laboratory instruments;
Maintain required records, reports and statistics;
Assist in the orientation and training of students and new employees;

Desirable Qualifications
High school graduation
Completion of a phlebotomy course
