Definition

Facilitates communication between individuals who speak two different languages. Interprets and/or translates and re-communicates both verbal and written messages from one language into another.

Typical Work

Interprets verbal communications, in real time as necessary, including speeches, meetings, classes and training sessions, or individual communications between two individuals or small groups of individuals, conveying original intent;

Translates written communications, including documents and forms, books, publications, web pages, meeting notes, emails, and presentations, ensuring translated texts conveys original meaning and tone;

Acts as a liaison between two parties; facilitating communications to assist with understanding documents and information, filling out forms and paperwork, and answering questions or addressing concerns;

Assists classroom instructor in meeting the needs of students; communicate assignment instructions and other information from the instructor to the student; interpret students questions directed to the instructor;

Provides note-taking materials for the students, and assist the classroom instructor in finding note-takers to take notes for students;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: fluency in communicating verbally and in writing in English and at least one other language; content editing tools; translation software; familiarity with digital communication policies, procedures; public speaking skills; written and verbal communication; understanding of grammar; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Ability to: follow directions; proofreading skills with the ability to identify grammar, spelling and punctuation errors; time-management skills; understand and follow oral and written directions; public speaking skills; prepare and deliver oral presentations; communicate across cultures in a variety of media; clearly relay ideas across cultures; work cooperatively with others; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Legal Requirement(s)

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and 6 months of experience interpreting and/or translating. Experience may be in the home, volunteer or paid.

AND

Fluency in at least two languages.
