Definition

Under the supervision of faculty or staff, provides support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for providing accompaniment for rehearsals and performances; assists with related tasks; and serves as an instructional resource for students and faculty in the area of fine arts.

Typical Work

Plays instrumental accompaniment from provided print scores/sheet music in a variety of settings (i.e. rehearsals, concerts, competitions, auditions, transitions, dynamics, performances, recordings, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring professional musical support for students and instructors;

Analyzes assigned music prior to rehearsal and performances (i.e. correct tempos, challenging transitions, dynamics, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring efficient use of rehearsal time and performance schedules;

Performs in a manner to assist to ensure performances are as flawless as possible and to improve personal technique and overall ensemble;

Ensures instruments are situated properly for rehearsals, performances, and recording sessions;

Encourages student musicians in collaborative processes;

Promotes institution by participating in photoshoots and interviews with print publications, media, and/or other employees and contractors;

Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: music theory; specific instrument skills; vocal techniques; sight reading, conducting, transposing, arranging and coaching skills; interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; technical aspects of field of specialty.

Ability to: follow directions; play instrument at an advanced level and sight read complex musical scores; transpose and arrange music; understand and follow oral and written directions; work cooperatively with others; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Desirable Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by private or college-level training in instrument and music theory;

AND

2 years of experience as an accompanist
