Definition

Supervises journey level Painters and related tradesworkers engaged in painting, glazing, sign writing, and floor covering, involved in the construction, repair, alteration, and maintenance of plant buildings and facilities.

OR

Directs a crew of inmates of correctional institutions, and performs skilled painting work. The positions are limited to two positions per institution or must direct crews consisting of three or more inmates.

Typical Work

Plans, lays out, directs and inspects work of crew of Painters and helpers or crew of inmates engaged in painting, finishing and refinishing exterior and interior surfaces of buildings and other structures, equipment and furnishings;

Recommends painting and refinishing work and consults with supervisors and others on projects, determines material and personnel requirements;

Keeps records; makes reports;

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, train new employees, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action.

Read plans and blueprints to determine the scope of work materials needed, and their cost and availability; inspect project progress;

Order materials and maintain an adequate inventory of required materials to carry on shop or maintenance work;

Assist in the development of the departmental budget;

Develop and conduct preventative maintenance programs on buildings and facilities;

Maintain records on work performed; write reports as required;

Enforce safety rules and regulations;

Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment of painting trade; characteristics of paints, varnishes, stains, shellacs, lacquers, enamels and solvents; methods of mixing paints, including matching, blending, harmonizing and contrasting colors, methods of preparing metal, wood, glass, plaster, cement and other surfaces; safety precautions; record keeping; basic computer skills.

Ability to: read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans and sketches; supervise crew of painters or inmates; direct rigging of scaffolds and swing stages and work on them; apply paints and other finishes by brush, roller or spray gun; estimate materials and personnel needed to complete project.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Desirable Qualifications

Two years of full time experience as journey‑level painter, including one year of full-time experience as a painter lead, or equivalent.

Some position may require a valid motor vehicle driver's license.
