Definition

Supervise assigned personnel and direct the operation of an electronics facility involved in the development and fabrication of general and specialized electronic equipment and instruments. Provide technical support to professional and technical personnel involved in experimental or developmental research projects.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general direction, with delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary actions.

Provide technical support and direct the operation of an electronics facility such as receiving work requests and reviewing drawings and schematics; consulting with faculty and staff on the design and fabrication of general and specialized electronic equipment and instruments; determining or recommending the choice of materials for use in the fabrication of instruments; developing and implementing preventive maintenance programs.

Typical Work

Receive work requests and review drawings and schematics; consult with professional and technical personnel on design concept, equipment requirements, equipment limitations, feasibility of fabrication and safety features of equipment in use or under construction; design, determine and/or recommend choice of materials, electronic components, etc;

Establish work schedules, instruct and direct difficult work operations, inspect work in progress and assure that standards of quality required by the work are met; provide technical instruction and guidance on repair procedures;

Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair medical, scientific, research electronics equipment to component level; provide guidance to other technicians on difficult repairs;

Order (or direct ordering) materials and tools, maintain an adequate inventory of required supplies to support assigned facilities;

Develop and direct preventive maintenance program on facilities, instruments, tools, and specialized equipment; maintain facility records and write reports as required;

Assist in or make arrangements for vendor services;

Assist in formulating and enforcing safety rules and insure facility cleanliness in accordance with area requirements;

Investigate commercial practices and projects to improve facility operations;

May perform limited maintenance or repair on computers;

Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications

One year of experience as an Electronics Technician 3 or Electronics Technician 4

OR

Five years of experience as an electronics technician

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
