Class Series Concept

Perform procedures and research activities in the field of flow cytometry

Definition

Perform procedures and/or research activities in a Flow Cytometry laboratory; and perform clerical, quality control and recordkeeping procedures in support of the laboratory operation.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Under general direction, process specimens and perform flow cytometric analysis and interpretation of data on varied tumor samples; prepare initial written report.

Typical Work

Interpret cell cycle data and histograms with respect to laboratory statistics and published references/literature to determine predicted patient prognosis; correlate findings from medical literature statistics with patient history, tumor or tissue type; prepare initial written report;

Sort cell preparations into highly resolved populations using single or dual laser flow cytometry;

Use computer programs associated with the cell cycle analysis to produce graphically displayed statistics; evaluate adequacy and change computer software options as needed to improve the analysis;

Standardize and perform data acquisition on an analyzer using appropriate optics, light filters and setting analysis conditions;

Record, interpret and report research data to build statistical base;

Conduct literature searches and adapt techniques to specific hospital and research needs;

Prepare cell suspensions from tissue samples by selecting, according to tissue condition, the protocol for appropriate preparation;

Maintain procedure manuals, quality control, quality assurance, and College of American Pathologists workload records;

Perform general laboratory duties such as preparing molar, normal and pH dependent solutions;

Perform routine maintenance on cell sorter and cell analyzer; tone machines;

Maintain laboratory instrumentation;

Perform related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree in a scientific field

AND

One year of technical experience in a Flow Cytometry Laboratory

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
