Definition

Positions in this level lead others and operate trucks and vans of all types and sizes to transport materials, equipment, and personnel. Operates vehicles rated at 60,000 Gross Combined Weight (GCW) or more, including semi-tractor/trailer equipment. Transports equipment, materials and supplies, and buses rated over 30 passenger capacity.

Typical Work

Drives tractor/trailer equipment transporting material, equipment and/or supplies;

Directs or participates in loading and unloading material, equipment or supplies;

Leads delivery and truck drivers performing a variety of duties such as: parcel post pickup, refuse collection, furniture transportation and storage, passenger transportation, laboratory equipment and supplies delivery and maintenance and building supplies delivery;

Maintains overtime records and assists supervisor in assigning, scheduling, inspection, and laying out work of driver personnel;

Maintains records of equipment use and gasoline and oil consumption;

Checks progress of delivery driver jobs; provides estimates regarding necessary equipment, manpower, and completion times;

Prepares work schedules;

Drives trucks and vans of all sizes; assists others in movement and storage of furniture, supplies, and equipment;

Dispatches delivery and pickup drivers;

Handles and transports hazardous materials;

Occasionally operates lighter trucks and equipment;

May supervise lower level staff.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position.

Persons legally authorized to work in the U.S. under federal law, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, are eligible for employment unless prohibited by other state or federal law.

Desirable Qualifications

Positions typically require high school graduation or equivalent

AND

Two years of full-time experience operating any combination of vehicles with a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds and a class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements as required by Federal law

AND

Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license with the ability to obtain intermediate or equivalent endorsement.
