Definition
Under general supervision, conduct fitness and stress assessments on cardiac patients, perform
exercise consults with patients for admittance to outpatient rehabilitation programs,
recommend exercise prescriptions adjusted to minimize physical stress, perform diagnostic
testing related to symptom presentation, and communicate abnormal rhythm presentation to
health care providers.

Typical Work
Implement cardiac rehabilitation therapy management programs; provide in-class adjustments based on cardiac rhythm monitoring and patient presentation; communicate changes to the health care provider in monthly care plan updates;
Confer with patients and medical practitioners to plan, implement and assess the treatment program;
Manage caseload of patients in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program; assesses areas of patient needs for reducing cardiovascular risk by developing individual treatment plans and coaching patients to make healthy lifestyle changes;
Review cardiac rhythms through heart monitoring during exercise, assessing effects of physical stress on the heart and adjust the program based on risk assessment;
Lead and perform warm-up and cool-down exercises; demonstrate and teach patients the correct use of equipment; monitor patients’ hemodynamic responses to exercise;
Educate patients on risk factor reduction, cardiovascular health, and strategies for successfully improving health status; answer participant questions about exercise and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease;
Provide education to participants and staff in the area of expertise in mobility, balance, proper exercise, and stretching techniques;
Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: cardiac rhythms in relation to cardiovascular stress associated with exercise; diagnostic stress tests and imaging; initial cardiovascular assessments; basic life support; medical terms and procedures related to echo sonography; proper uses of exercise equipment; preparation of reports and analysis of trends; curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
Ability to: work and communicate with a population diverse in age, ethnicity, educational background, cognitive/psychological status, and physical capacity; motivate patients in order to drive behavioral changes; actively listen; record detailed information; accurately assess patient’s strength, flexibility, vital signs, and other physical conditions; analyze information and think critically; and regularly interact with patients, their families, and other healthcare providers.

Desirable Qualifications
Master’s degree in exercise science, physiology, health education or related field.
