Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the supervisory level. With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of
applicants, train new employees, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct
annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action.

Typical Work
Responsible for recruitment and hiring of Perfusion staff, including competency assessment, appropriate orientation, and input regarding annual evaluation processes;
Review and approve monthly schedule, including on-call schedules at multiple clinical sites, and the upkeep and ordering for perfusion section supplies;
Perform annual performance reviews of all perfusion staff;
Responsible for content development for in-service perfusion clinical training and education sessions;
Performs the duties of Perfusionist and Perfusionist Lead;
Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of: anatomy and physiology; heart-lung machine equipment use and maintenance; pharmacology for the drugs used during procedures; surgical practices, including sterile techniques; clinically appropriate array of equipment and supplies tailored to the cardiac, thoracic, vascular, organ transplant, obstetrics, and orthopedic surgical disciplines; blood product use and management; short and long term post care protocols for ventricular assist device and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation patients; supervisory and management practices; leadership skills
Ability to: understand the procedures performed by surgeons; analyze lab results, imaging, and medical history information; work harmoniously with patients and other health professionals and paraprofessionals as part of the surgical team; exercise mature judgment in determining when to consult other resources for diagnosis; work independently and make medically consequential during procedures; manage multiple priorities; make clear explanations of technical conditions to professionals and nonprofessionals; physically operate large and highly technical equipment; react quickly in emergency situations; instruct others on technical skills required; supervise and lead a team

Current certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

Desirable Qualifications
Graduation from an Accredited Perfusion Technology Program or approved program of Extracorporeal Technology
Four years of experience as a Perfusionist
Equivalent education/experience.
AND
Four years of experience as a Perfusionist
Equivalent education/experience.
